A big number of/on buildings

Recently I have seen the address numbers on many buildings very large on the door or on the wall, a new trend and quite fun! With this number nine I start the series of “house numbers” …

Friday, the lion sleeps this weekend…

Rotterdam Daily Photo: Friday, the lion sleeps this weekend…

A photo from the old entry gate Delftse Poort dates from a while back >>. There this lion stands / rests. Quote on the statue: “This lion, which flanked Rotterdam’s coat of arms on the north side of the Delftse Poort, has been lost for years and was found in Blaricum by members of the Nieuwskelder. after which it was located in the facade of building no. 65 A on the Coolsingel in Rotterdam for years. ” Now it has his place besides the model of the Delftse Poort.

It is now Friday, almost weekend, and the lion is sleeping this weekend … Have a great weekend everyone!

Hidden art

This mural is almost hidden in a narrow passage from the street to a courtyard. If you walk a little too fast or you look at your phone for too long, you have missed a nice piece of art! Location: Bredestraathof…

A late update but here its is! This afternoon I passed this cafe-restaurant on the Goudsesingel. It seemed full of guests but it turned out to be a still life that was only good for take away orders …

A new store in the old store!

Rotterdam Daily Photo: A new store in the old store

I photographed this storefront while traveling by tram. Located on Schiedamseweg, close to Delfshaven, you will still find an old facade of the De Gruyter retail chain here. Founded in 1818 (!) And overtaken by time and new trends in 1971. Other retail chains tried to save it but it was to late … Tomorrow is Monday again, a new week with new photo opportunities! Have fun!

Photographed at the south bank of Rotterdam near the Erasmus bridge. And previously you were shown the right way to the fun things in Rotterdam, but now there is also a sign for the right way to keep your health! Or is it a tourist trap?

Closed in silence

Rotterdam Daily Photo: Closed in silence
Rotterdam Daily Photo: Closed in silence

The Groothandels building located at Stationsplein, a major reconstruction project just after the second world war. But what really matters in this photo is brasserie Engels, at the bottom right of the photo. Opened in 1884 and at its current location since 1952. The name is still brightly shining but it silently closed during the first Corona lockdown so as not to open anymore …

The look of a early shift

Rotterdam Daily Photo: The look of a early shift

Start of the shift. Carnisselande, line nr. 25, direction Schiebroek. I took this early in the morning. Its fall so dark, lonely and quiet. This place is both a start and end of the line.

P.S. This line runs from Barendrecht to Rotterdam-Schiebroek. So technically Barendrecht but the tram is and goes to Rotterdam, so a bit of artistic freedom!

The never come back line

Rotterdam Daily Photo: The never come back line
Rotterdam Daily Photo: The never come back line

Almost 30 years ago we celebrated our wedding on these party ships. Abandoned for a few years and poor maintenance were disastrous. The city’s new plans for the site have put the demolition workers to work. The end of the line …

P.S. Almost a year ago I took this picture on the same location >>

Almost forgotten, luitenant Koenders

Rotterdam Daily Photo: Almost forgotten, luitenant Koenders
Rotterdam Daily Photo: Almost forgotten, luitenant Koenders

I drive past this place almost every day and I always thought to walk there to see for whom or what the memorial plate is. This is the text: “On May 14, 1940, our comrade First Lieutenant Koenders gave his life for the fatherland at this place. In grateful memory, IV battalion, 15 Infantry Regiment and Burgerwacht van Rotterdam”.

Every 4th May, a small wreath and some flowers are laid to commemorate. With only a few people and in the weeks after that no one at all thought about what happened. Almost forgotten.

This year France is closer to home

Rotterdam Daily Photo: This year France is closer to home

The world has become smaller with the luxury of traveling by plane, etc., but this year the distances have increased! So not in the holiday traffic jam near Lyon or on the périphérique near Paris. Someone here on the Nieuwe Markt hung these signs as a reference or as a tribute? Not jeu de boules but Jules de boules …

A real Dutch and Rotterdam image in one

Rotterdam Daily Photo: A real Dutch and Rotterdam image in one
Rotterdam Daily Photo: A real Dutch and Rotterdam image in one

Today, after a short drive, I planned a lunch stop in the Kralingse Bos. A park with a number of windmills. Mill De Lelie is the smallest and the oldest mill. This dates from 1777. Mill De Ster is first mentioned in 1830. The Star burned down in 1865 and 1962 and was completely rebuilt both times. The mills used to grind spices and tobacco. You can find these windmills at the Plaszoom. Worth a visit!

P.S. I tried to take a not too touristy photo!
