Fancy a walk on a Sunday? Many people visit the Lijnbaan! The Lijnbaan was the first shopping promenade in the Netherlands, and the first car-free shopping promenade in the world! Named after the rope-making factory that was located here between 1667 and 1845. Construction started in 1949. A special pedestrian zone in the middle of the city was a novelty and attracted a lot of international attention at the time of the opening on October 9, 1953. There are many shops of large and well-known brands, as well as small businesses with their own specialties. The Lijnbaan is one of the architectural icons of the reconstruction. The shops of the Lijnbaan are included on the list of national monuments. Worth a visit!

Just a street in Rotterdam

Not much to say about this picture. I liked the view of the old houses with at the end the new buildings and the blue sky… Its the Jacobusstraat, a side street of the Oude Binnenweg, a nice old shopping street in the city center.

The Binnenweg already existed in 1454 and was the connection between Rotterdam and Schoonderloo and Delfshaven. The Oude Binnenweg between the Karel Doormanstraat and the Mauritsweg was hardly affected by the bombing of Rotterdam and is the only pre-war shopping street in the center of Rotterdam.

North, East, South and West is one direction

This morning I walked through this shopping mall and exactly in the middle of it you can find this shopping mall compass rose! It shows you all the directions, north, east, south and west but actually it is one direction, the shopping mall! This compass rose was unveiled during the opening of the mall in 1996 and has the following inscription:

het hart van de stad is meer dan een verzameling gebouwen
gebouwen, winkels, straten en pleinen, het hart is
die ene plek waar je kunt voelen dan een stad leeft

Translation:

the heart of the city is more than a collection of buildings
buildings, shops, streets and squares, the heart is
that one place where you can feel that a city is alive

Remember friday night, shopping night? This is the same spot but the picture is taken from the other side, facing the location where I stood then. I like this photo for the festive lights reflections in the stairs and sidewalks, it was a rainy monday evening but I was there!

This tree wants to shake your hand

Yes, go ahead! Shake the hand of this tree! And its a warm hand (37 degrees Celsius – 98.6 degrees Fahrenheit or normal body temperature)! Made out of bronze you can find this tree in front of shopping center De Groene Passage, at the corner of Goudsesingel / Mariniersweg. The tree symbolizes the relation between human and nature and is made by the artist Hans Lemmen in 2001. The name of this artwork? You guessed it: the tree!

Its a friday night and beside a night on the town its also a shopping night. Shops in the center of the city are open till 21.00 hours. Festive lighting is coming into place for the coming months as you can see in this picture of the nicknamed “Koopgoot” – slang for buy (koop) ditch (goot). I didn’t buy anything tonight but enjoyed the ambiance. Have a nice weekend!
